Con la llegada del final de año comienza la sistemática publicación de artículos que recogen lo mejor (o peor) de la temporada que se está yendo. Con el diseño web ocurre algo similar así que me gustaría hacer mi aporte personal al género “lo mejor de 2011” con una mirada un poco más general sobre aquellos puntos que han marcado el año en el diseño para la web.

HTML5 y CSS3 Los diseñadores tomaron la delantera y está utilizando CSS3 de manera cada vez más fluida para simplificar procesos que an

antes requerían de trucos y “hacks” para que funcionacen corramente. Bordes redondeados, sombras, incluso animaciones y menús interactivos: con CSS3 definitivamente la vida es más fácil. HTML5 viene algo más demor ado. Muchos ya estamos utilizando las etiquetas semánticas específicas como <nav>, <footer>y similares. De todos modosno hay un uso masivo de las nuevos recursos que ofrece el lenguaje a nivel de programación, salvo como proyectos experimentales. La consolidación de la nueva generación de navegadores que ofrece soporte completo para HTML5 quizás ayude a un desarrollo más profundo para 2012. Responsive web design

The big bang visualisation of the top 140 Twitter influencers

The Information Architects team have come up with a way of looking at Twitter that echoes maps of how the universe began

Back at the dawn of microblogging time, when Twitter had only just started, there were only three users who mattered: Biz Stone, Evan Williams and Jack Dorsey – the three key people behind the service. Now there are more than a hundred million users – but the key influencers in this huge network can be quite easily identified.

Now the team at Information Architects have decided to come up with a neat Twitter visualisation, akin to The Independent’s classic 1992 “How the universe began” graphic, of the top 140 Twitter influencers, “sorted by #name #handle #category #influence #activity” and by when they joined the service (which determines how close to the centre they are).

The size of the blob indicates how many followers; “influence” is measured by… actually, they don’t explain, though possibly it’s using something like the Twiinfluence algorithm.

Interesting to see who’s in there: Stone and Williams, of course, but also latecomer Marissa Mayer (VP of search product and user experience at Google), who only joined in July 2009, and Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google (December 2009) – and of course there’s always Bill Gates, who didn’t get on board until January 2010. And of course Stephen Fry and indeed Jonathan Ross.

You can get the PDF (1.1MB) or buy it from them for $99 because, as they remark, “we’re convinced that our print is way superior to what you can do with your plotter”. And you will need a plotter – the graphic is 84cm by 119cm.

Bring augmented reality to your road trip with Wikitude Drive app for Android

Let’s face it: dedicated GPS systems are not perfect. From time to time the maps look nothing like the route you’re driving, the device doesn’t recognize newer roads (if you missed a software update), and it’s bulky to carry out of the car to prevent theft. Looking to making navigation more realistic and convenient, the mobile augmented reality shop Wikitude just released the AR navigation app Wikitude Drive for Android smartphones.

Rather than display a 2D map a line to show you where to go, the Wikitude Drive app uses your phone’s built-in camera to show a live view of the road you’re driving on and overlays your route on top. So when you are looking at the app, you’re technically still keeping your eyes on the road. It also comes with digital 3D maps from Navteq to help with trip planning and night driving, voice commands, as well as turn-by-turn navigation that traditional GPS systems have.

But unlike other GPS devices, the Wikitude Drive app is constantly updating its data so you won’t have to maintain the app, but the downside is that it sounds like a battery drain. It also has the convenience of existing on your phone, so when you bring your phone out of the car, the app will continue to navigate you by directing you to interested places on foot. Before you rush to the Android Market to search for the app though, a couple of caveats. At the moment, Wikitude Drive only works on a limited number of Android phones, specifically: Samsung Galaxy Tab, Sony Xperia X8, HTC Desire, Nexus One and LG GT540 Optimus. You would probably need a car charger to go along with these phones as no smartphone battery can last an entire road trip.

The Wikitude Drive app is available now on Android Market for $9.99.

Especially for young and aspiring graphic designers, who keep on committing mistakes because of lack of experience. You must have heard of the old adage “To err is human”. So the next time you make a mistake, don’t fret over it…instead learn from your blunders. Having learnt from my mistakes, which I encountered in my career, I wish to educate my fellow designers about some of the errors, which they should avoid in any case. Following are 10 of the most common mistakes that most graphic designers commit in their graphic design careers:   1. Working without a Design Brief: In any graphic design project, the details are necessary to guide a designer through the entire process. Some graphic designers have a bad habit of being overly confident and start the project without acquiring a detailed design brief.  A design brief helps you collect all the information about your clients’ design project. Without knowing your client’s requirements, you simply cannot work on a logo design project.   2. Ignoring the Target Audience: The purpose of graphic design is to visually aid companies in expressing their message to their target market. Hence, if the graphic designers ignore the target audience, they will never be able to create the right design. In order to create relevant designs, you must first analyze the intended customers for which it is aimed at. Overlooking the target will lead to a weak and aimless design.   3. Not maintaining a Contract: In a graphic designer’s career, salary and payments issues are frequent. When you don’t maintain a contract with your clients, you are likely to be swindled of your hard earned money. I don’t wish to imply that every client has ill-intentions. But some clients have a habit of getting the work done and running away with it without paying the designer.   4. Hence, what you create in color might not look good in black and white.   8. Pass off Plagiarism as Inspiration: One of the prime qualities of a graphic designer is their ability to be original. Another big blunder you could make as designers is to copy others work. Some designers have a bad habit of passing off what they plagiarize as merely inspiration. While you may get away with it sometimes, but in the long run, your credibility as a genuine and original designer will be badly affected.   9. Neglecting the Power of Simplicity: Some graphic designers believe that if they add more effects in design, it will become attractive. But the reality is otherwise. Adding too many elements to a design makes it complicated and messy to look at. They often neglect the power and significance of simplicity. Lose Confidence: The greatest mistake you can make in life is to continually fear you will make one. Be it graphic designing or any other profession, confidence is crucial in the success of your career. One of the gravest mistake you can make as a graphic designer is to lose hope in the middle of a project.
